Rediscovering the Undiscovered: Revitalizing the Cerro Juan Diaz Archaeological Ceramic Collection (Presentation in Spanish)

September 30, 2024

This research expands knowledge about the archaeological ceramics of the Gran Cocle culture at the Cerro Juan Diaz Archaeological Site, which spans a period of occupation from 200 BC to 1550 AD and is one of the largest pre-Hispanic communities in central Panama.

In archaeology, many finds are left behind waiting for analysis due to a variety of circumstances ranging from the environmental to the bureaucratic. The Cerro Juan Díaz ceramic collection, created in the 1990s, has waited almost 20 years to be updated. To this end, an Archaeological Reference Catalog for the study of Pre-Hispanic ceramics from the central area of Panama was created as a public and didactic tool. The catalog has guides, glossaries and detailed technical data sheets for a total of 42 representative pieces of the site. With the objective of connecting the evidence of the past with a new audience to facilitate future research.
