Ecosystem Ecology

Ecosystem ecology concerns the movement of energy, water and nutrients through organisms and natural communities. Tropical forests are a crucial component of the global carbon cycle, responsible for 33 percent of terrestrial carbon uptake through photosynthesis and 40 percent of terrestrial carbon storage in biomass and soils. STRI scientists are working to understand how infertile tropical soils limit carbon uptake and storage and to improve understanding of future changes in tropical forest carbon and nutrient cycles as atmospheric composition and climate change.
