Geography and Biogeography
From GISbased landuse studies and GPSbased studies of animal tracking to molecular biologybased studies of plants, animals and insects, STRI scientists consider the distribution of species (including humans) in space and time and the geological, physical, biological and cultural forces that explain them. Our location in Panama, a land bridge that connects two continents and separates two oceans, offers unique opportunities for biogeography studies as does our leading role in the Smithsonian’s global earth observatory programs, a network of more than 60 forest research sites around the globe (ForestGEO) and five marine research sites (MarineGEO) in the Atlantic from Chesapeake Bay to the Caribbean.
