Conservation Biology

Decades of tropical biology research has led to the designation of national parks and marine protected areas across the region and continues to inform conservation policy in Latin America and beyond. Before a lethal fungal infection decimated amphibians in Panama, researchers created a captive breeding program with the hopes of eventually restoring wild frog populations. Ships entering the Panama Canal from the Pacific follow a specific route intended to greatly reduce lethal whale strikes, based on STRI data on whale migration routes. STRI manages one of the largest reforestation experiments of its kind, generating information to inform land use decisions balancing carbon storage, water resources management and biodiversity conservation.
