BCI 100 media visit
Local and international Spanish-speaking journalists recently visited Barro Colorado Island and had the opportunity to interview several scientists who presented their projects as well as Linette Dutari, associate director of communications and Beth King, communications manager. We thank them for their visit and look forward to their reporting.
OSP Visits STRI
Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) team members Karen Otiji, Kean McKenzie, Kristine Juncker, and Dr. Jennifer Salazar visited STRI to gather information on emerging collaborations, projects, and partnerships for future funding opportunities.
Monthly sloth census
On Sunday, July 7, a total of 5 sloths were counted during the monthly sloth census at Punta Culebra. It was a sunny, 88ºF, and the majority of the sloths were found sleeping in Sponidas trees along the trail. The next census will be on Sunday, August 4th, at 2:45PM.
Q?rioso talk of the month
The Q?rioso talk of the month was in celebration of International Shark Awareness Day, presented by Maria Mercedes Gomez, a STRI intern with Dr. Erin Dillon and the O’Dea Lab. This day is celebrated every July 14th with the goal of debunking some myths and raising awareness about the importance of sharks in order to protect them and promote their conservation.
Caroline Gabel visits Punta Culebra
Caroline Gabel, president and CEO of Shared Earth Foundation, visited Punta Culebra with Brian Gratwicke, interdisciplinary researcher at the National Zoo to tour the center and learn about present and future activities.
Children's Day at Punta Culebra
Punta Culebra entertained boys and girls of all ages with a sand sculpture contest focused on the animals found at the Center. The Gamboa Heliconius Lab team also organized a mini stand with several butterfly activities where visitors could learn interesting facts about this magnificent group of animals.
First Aid and Fire Extinguisher use training at STRI
Recently, STRI employees, students and interns had the opportunity to receive training from Grupo Vive in a first aid course, as well as a course on the use of fire extinguishers by José Perurena, STRI's safety director. This experience proved to be highly educational and enriching. Anyone in the STRI Community is encouraged to join the Safety team.
ESRI International User Conference
GIS Analyst Milton Solano represented STRI during the ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute) International User Conference 2024 to update his knowledge on the world of geospatial technology. During the event, the Smithsonian Institution participated along with staff from the Museum of Natural History and Smithsonian Facilities with a booth where they received distinguished visitors such as Jack Dangermond, President of ESRI, and Ricaurte Vasquez, Administrator of the Panama Canal.
Together We Thrive: Connecting at the Intersections
Is this year's theme of the National Education Summit, a three-day program with online, in-person, and on-demand engagement opportunities for participation from educators, experts, scientists and other members of the education profession. Jimena Pitty, STRI Public Programs Manger, participated representing STRI in Washington, D.C.
Q?Bus visits the Book and Youth Literature Festival
The Q?Bus Program was invited by the Boquete Public Library where the community of Tierras Altas and surrounding areas, students, teachers and tourists, had the opportunity to learn about the research carried out by STRI in Panama. We thank the Boquete Public Library staff the for the invitation.
Q?Bus visits schools
In the month of July the Q?Bus visited 10 schools and for the first time visited schools in Veraguas, Chiriquí and the Ngöbe-Buglé region. Don’t miss the next Q?Bus visit!
