From Dec. 2-7, an international group of 50 scientists from Smithsonian research centers and their colleagues gathered in Panama for a microbiome workshop: “The Isthmus of Panama for the study of microbial symbiosis: What can we learn from comparative analysis of host-associated microbiomes across two oceans?”

This year’s microbiome workshop activities took place in Panama City (off-campus and at Punta Culebra Nature Center), in the field and at Bocas del Toro Research Station.

Director Matthew Larsen and the advancement office offer sincere thanks to staff from all of these facilities for their help in making this happen.

Additional funding for this workshop was generously provided by the Smithsonian Office of the Provost’s One Smithsonian Symposia Program and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The workshop was by invitation only.
