Global Big Day in Punta Culebra

Punta Culebra's naturalist guides participated in Global Big Day, an annual birding event that takes place worldwide on the second Saturday of May. The challenge is to record the largest number of bird species observed in a single day. This year 50 birds were counted, 7 more than last year and 4 species of birds new to the Center, making a total of 116 birds recorded since 1996 to date.
The 4 new birds recorded are:
- Rufous-browed Peppershrike (Cyclarhis gujanensis).
- Tennessee Warbler (Leiothlypis peregrina).
- Short-tailed Hawk (Buteo brachyurus)
- Plain-colored Tanager (Tangara inornata)

Big thanks to Marianne Prahl

Marianne Prahl has made invaluable contributions as a volunteer at STRI since 2019. Originally from Denmark, she has lived across the globe before settling in Panama. Her historical research supported 44 articles on Jenny C. White del Bal’s 19th-century letters and a manuscript on La Niña Jenny. She also investigated British entomologist George Champion’s expeditions, publishing her findings in eight issues of Epocas. Spending hours in Panama’s Biblioteca Nacional archives, she built strong connections for STRI. Additionally, she digitized 12,000 slides and photos from fieldwork across Panama, Central America, the Caribbean, and Colombia.
