¿Cómo influye el clima en el ciclo del carbono de los bosques a nivel mundial?

Los bosques influyen en el clima en parte a través de su papel clave en el ciclo global del carbono. Los intereses de Kristina incluyen cómo el ciclo del carbono en los bosques es influenciado por factores tales como la edad del bosque y el clima. Para estudiar esto, aprovecha los datos de la red CTFS-ForestGEO y la base de datos ‘Global Forest Carbon’ (ForC). ForC, que ha sido creado y es mantenido por el laboratorio de Kristina, es la base de datos global más grande y completa en existencia sobre las reservas forestales y los flujos anuales de carbono.

¿Cómo está el cambio climático afectando los disturbios forestales y su posterior recuperación?

El cambio climático y otras presiones antropogénicas están alterando la frecuencia e intensidad de una variedad de perturbaciones forestales (por ejemplo, sequías, incendios, plagas de insectos/brotes de patógenos) y la dinámica de la recuperación del bosque después del disturbio. En algunos casos, esto puede afectar dramáticamente los ecosistemas y paisajes forestales, con importantes consecuencias para la biodiversidad y retroalimentación del clima. La investigación de Kristina sobre este tema ha abarcado las respuestas de los bosques a la sequía, los efectos climáticos sobre la sucesión de los bosques, las respuestas al cambio climático de paisajes boscosos propensos a incendios y los patrones a escala fina de mortalidad de los árboles.

¿Cuán valiosos son los bosques para la regulación del clima?

Los bosques regulan fuertemente el clima de la Tierra. Despejar sólo 100 pies cuadrados de bosque tiene aproximadamente el mismo efecto sobre el clima que atravesar los Estados Unidos en carro.
