Overview

Join our active scientific community for an amazing, hands-on research experience in the tropics. Internships offer a way-in for undergraduates, recent graduates and beginning graduate students. At the same time that you learn more about the research process, scientists get to know you, leading to future opportunities.

Before you apply

Because placement depends on finding a match between your interests and a suitable research project overseen by a STRI scientist or research associate, we encourage you to learn more about our scientific staff research interests. Current project opportunities (paid or unpaid) are listed on our new internship opportunity bulletin board. If you are having trouble identifying someone whose research interests align with your own, or contacting a scientist, please let us know to fellows@si.edu You may also find a list of research associates and their interests on this document starting on page 156.

Available internship types

STRI General Internship Pool

Competitive program funded by the Smithsonian and generous donors, open to all nationalities. The purpose of the STRI General Internship Pool is to provide a place for internship applicants who would like to pursue a research experience with one of our scientific mentors based on their interests.

STRI-SENACYT Internship

Thanks to funds provided by Panama’s Office of Science and Technology (SENACYT), STRI is able to offer internship postions to Panamanian citizens currently registered at Panamanian Universities as undergraduate students or who have obtained an undergraduate diploma in the last 2 years or who are currently registered in a Masters program.

Internships funded by researchers

Sometimes a research project has its own funding, and a scientist or graduate student is able to pay an intern. For information about current opportunities, check our internship bulletin board.

Self-funded internships

The intern is funded by their own university or another source. For information about current opportunities, check our internship bulletin board.
