Enfoque de investigación
Mi investigación principal se centra en los mecanismos ecológicos que estructuran las comunidades forestales y definen sus dinámicas espaciales y temporales a pequeña y gran escala. Esta investigación abarca temas tan diversos como la demografía forestal, los rasgos funcionales, la estructura y cambios del dosel a través de la sucesión ecológica, patrones espaciales y los cambios en especies de árboles de bosques templados y tropicales, y cómo el cambio climático influye en los cambios en la biomasa durante el desarrollo de un rodal. El trabajo combina investigación de campo, análisis estadísticos avanzados y simulaciones por computadora, y cuenta con el apoyo de una red global de científicos en ecología forestal, estadística, informática y ciencias climáticas.
La red ForestGEO de parcelas forestales ha ofrecido durante largo tiempo a los científicos una manera de probar si los patrones locales observados reflejan procesos globales. Las parcelas de bosques templados extienden este programa a biomas críticos, que muestran una alta biomasa y un alto crecimiento, así como muchos de los patrones espaciales y temporales de los bosques tropicales, pero con muchas menos especies. Además, la mayoría de los bosques templados tiene un largo historial de impacto humano, tanto directo como indirecto, y estudiarlos ofrece información fundamental sobre cómo los sistemas naturales pueden verse afectados por la influencia humana y cómo responden a ella.
