Mechanisms of cellular death in competitive interactions between the encrusting excavating sponge Cliona delitrix and reef corals

I am working with excavating sponges and corals interactions. The aim of my project is understand the mechanism(s) by which the excavating and encrusting sponge Cliona delitrix is able to kill corals. I am evaluating through dissociated cell experiments, if coral cell death occur from a decrease in pH, or from allelochemicals produced by the sponge. Also, through experiments of contact between coral and sponge cell aggregates, I intend to find and describe possible histoincompatibility processes during tissue contact.
