Fees
Fellows
Fellows are recipients of STRI or Smithsonian Institution research awards and have been approved by STRI’s Office of Academic Programs (AP) or SI’s Office of Fellowships & Internships (OFI). STRI staff scientists and research associates can host fellows who are funded through AP or OFI. Only STRI staff scientists may use funds that do not originate with AP or OFI to support fellows.
Interns
Interns are generally undergraduates or recent graduates (though interns may have higher academic levels), have funding from STRI’s Office of Academic Programs (AP) or SI’s Office of Fellowships & Internships (OFI), and have been approved by STRI’s Office of Academic Programs (AP). STRI staff scientists and research associates can host interns who are funded through AP or OFI. Only STRI staff scientists may use funds that do not originate with AP or OFI to support interns.
Volunteers
Volunteers are unpaid personnel officially participating in STRI’s volunteer program. Only STRI employees can host volunteers. A brief description of the work to be done by the volunteer and the place it will be done must be provided to the Visitor Services Office.

Research Associates
In accordance with the SD 205, a Research Associate is a researcher formally designated through a process that includes a nomination, a review and approval from the STRI Director. Approved Research Associates receive an Appointment Letter from the OFI – AP that sets forth the terms of the status between STRI and the RA. This is status is for 3 years renewable, and any rights are non-transferrable.
