Police Force will monitor compliance with total quarantine this Saturday and Sunday

Today, April 9th, a month after the announcement of the first case of COVID-19 in the country, the National Government, as part of its mitigation policy, reminds the population that the best strategies against the pandemic are to stay at home and observe the respiratory hygiene measures that, in addition to the use of masks, will control of the spread of the virus. 

Resolution 372, dated April 9th, 2020, which establishes new measures to restrict citizens’ mobility on Saturday April 11th, has already been published in the Official Gazette. Sunday has been added; no one may transit, except for the established exceptions. 

The Minister of Security, Juan Pino, reported that with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Commerce the safe-conduct letters granted will be re-evaluated because they have noticed that some companies are abusing this privilege. 

In the case of organizations in the agricultural industry, food production and distribution this document is not required. 

Minera Panamá

In relation to the situation that arose at the Minera Panama site, Minister Turner said that, between yesterday and today, 39 workers (10 COVID-19 positives, the rest are contacts and with respiratory symptoms) were isolated in a hotel in Coclé. The company and the workers agreed with MINSA, and an evacuation protocol was established for those who were in the mine. 

Panama Solidarity

The Minister of Social Development, Markova Concepción, said that 267,977 bags and 142,927 solidarity bonds have been delivered in the country. 

She reported that this Thursday an attempt was made to take aid from the Program to San Miguelito, but that the residents of various communities closed the streets, which prevented them from arriving. She requests the support of the population. 

Sanitary measures

This Thursday an intensive care unit with capacity for four patients was set up at the San Miguel Arcángel Hospital, to be used if needed. There is also a hospitalization room at the National Institute of Physical Medicine, located on the Centenario road, to receive patients with positive COVID-19. 

Epidemiology report

At the close of this Thursday, April 9th., a total of 2,752 accumulated cases and 224 new cases were registered, while 16 persons have recovered. 

196 patients are hospitalized in the wards; 107 in intensive care units and to date 66 deaths have been registered. 

The MINSA thanks businessmen from the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama, who donated 300 sheets and pillows to the National Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, to Cervecería Nacional, which donated a considerable amount of bottled water for the anonymous heroes who day by day fight against COVID-19. 

This Thursday the MINSA received the shipment of 1,442,920 quadrivalent influenza vaccines. They are valued at 8 million US dollars. In the coming days, the methodology for their application in the country will be announced.
