MINSA, MICI and MITRADEL order the closure of Minera Panamá

The Ministry of Health (MINSA) reports that in order to continue safeguarding the health of the workers of the company, Minera Panamá, SA, in coordination with the Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MICI) and the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development (MITRADEL ), the temporary closure of the mining company was ordered.

Given the appearance of cases of COVID-19 in the mining company since March 20, the MINSA had issued instructions to quarantine the mine, but due to the new epidemiological situation, temporary closure was ordered, accompanied by public health recommendations.

Support from universities

Panama’s Health Minister Rosario Turner visited the Technological University of Panama on Monday, where a group of students and engineers presented a project to produce 100 humidifiers to treat patients with COVID-19. In the next few days they will sign a letter of understanding to make the elaboration of this equipment feasible, as well as other projects such as the production of masks and masks for health personnel.

The University of Panama donated MINSA a considerable number of boxes of disposable masks, gloves and surgical gowns, to be used in medical centers.

Epidemiological report

As of today, Monday, April 6, 14 recovered people are reported, and 112 new positive cases, for a cumulative total of 2,100 patients. 1,777 people are quarantined at home; 167 are hospitalized in the ward; 359 in hotels; 88 in intensive care, and 55 deaths have been reported.

The 42 people who were in the Emmaus Center completed their mandatory isolation and returned to their homes in adequate condition.

Capacity expansion

With the aim of expanding capacity in Colón, the Caja de Seguro Social made an arrangement  with the Caja de Ahorros Bank for 72 additional beds in a hotel located next to the Colón Government headquarters in Espinar, informed the director of the institution, Enrique Lau Cortés, who also denounced actions of "bullying" the director of the CSS in western Panama, for whom he requested her respect.

The following telephone lines have been enabled so that family members can call and inquire about the condition of patients, from 12:00 noon to 3.00 pm.

Pensioner Cards

Today, along with pensioners checks, 14,000 cards were distributed. 30,000 additional cards will be received this week, while the delivery process is already organized.

Thank you to the residents of Soná, who echoed the need for the doctors and supported them yesterday with adequate accommodations.

Panama Solidarity

IFARHU director Bernardo Meneses reported that food bag production began in David, Chiriquí. More than 4,000 bags were made for the Panama Solidarity Program.

154 thousand bonds have been delivered, and as of April 13, 4 bonds of 20 balboas will be delivered, as provided in the decree governing the program.

Security Report

The Minister of Public Security, Juan Pino, expressed that during the quarantine and the alcohol ban, the rates of violence and crime have been reduced.

As for the total quarantine, on Sunday it was carried out by the vast majority of citizens, but the relationship between the areas with the greatest numbers of violations of the rule and the number of positive cases of COVID-19 continues.
