National Government announces the start of a mandatory national quarantine

The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo Cohen, announced today the start of a complete quarantine. During a message to the nation, he reported that this new mobility restriction will take effect starting Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at 5:01 a.m.

The Ministry of Public Security reported on the rules for mobility, which will be gradual and modified according to the last number of the personal identity card or passport, in the case of foreigners who are in the country.

The Ministry of Health presented the web portal https://yomeinformopma.org/ as an official information center, available to all citizens. On this website, you will be able to get the official communications, decrees and relevant data on COVID-19 in Panama and the start of the mandatory national quarantine.

Providing evidence and Panamanians abroad

On Tuesday morning, the National Government received a donation from the Republic of China of 5,000 tests for detection of COVID-19, which will strengthen the “Protégete Panamá” (Protect yourself Panama) plan, and a shipment of masks and mechanical fans will soon arrive in the country.

The Ministry of Health (MINSA) and the Caja de Seguro Social (CSS) reinforce the compliance of protocols for the protection of medical personnel in all medical facilities and as part of the strategy to deal with the pandemic.

In addition, 223 new officials have been appointed so far, including doctors, nurses, drivers and others.

This Tuesday, the National Government, through the Chancery and the Ministry of Health, managed the arrival of two humanitarian flights with Panamanians from various parts of the world, who must remain in isolation in places designated by MINSA.

Register of positive cases

As of today, March 24th, a total of 443 cases have been reported, of which 98 are new; 243 men and 200 women; 64 are hospitalized, 19 in intensive care, 45 in the wards and 373 are in home quarantine; and two more deaths are reported.

The sectors with most cases are: San Francisco, Juan Díaz and Bethania. The National Government reiterates that sanctions of up to 100,000 balboas will be imposed for those who violate home isolation.

The entire population across the country is reminded to stay home and follow basic hygiene measures, such as frequent hand washing.
