ELISABETH KALKO
FELLOWSHIP
ENDOWMENT

The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) has established a fellowship endowment to honor the lifetime scientific achievements and memory of our friend and colleague Elisabeth Kalko, who died suddenly and unexpectedly while on a field trip in Tanzania in September 2011.

Elisabeth conducted research at STRI for 20 years and dedicated her life to the study of bats. Her pioneering studies, extensive knowledge of natural history, bioacoustics, and ecology, and infectious enthusiasm, attracted a large number of collaborators and students to Panama, many of whom have launched highly successful careers in part through their association with Elisabeth.

In recognition of Elisabeth's efforts to foster and promote the careers of young biologists and her belief in the importance and value of field-based tropical research, STRI has established an Elisabeth Kalko Fellowship, to be awarded preferentially to a student who is studying bat behavior and ecology.

To provide an enduring memorial to Elisabeth, we are soliciting contributions to the Kalko Fellowship Endowment.

Ziegler Prints

Acclaimed photographer Christian Ziegler's work has been published in National Geographic, GEO, Smithsonian, Wildlife and Natural History magazines. He works with conservation groups such as WWF. Since 2002, Christian has been Associate for Communication at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. He has won several international awards including the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Christian was a friend of Elisabeth Kalko's and photographed the scientist and her research on many occasions.

Printed by National Geographic Imaging, these are Lambda prints produced on matte Fuji Crystal Archive paper. Net proceeds from the sale of Christian's prints will go toward the Kalko Fellowship Endowment. It's the perfect way to contribute to the Fellowship Endowment and own a Ziegler fine art print. For an additional fee, Christian will be available to sign prints at the event.

If you would like to pick up your print at the Panama events, please let us know in advance which prints and sizes you are purchasing and we will have them ready and packaged for your trip home. Prints will be sold exclusively at this event. Register online to make your selections.
