How are global rainforests changing?

As director of the 51 plots that comprise ForestGEO, a global network coordinated by the Smithsonian Institution, Stuart Davies is uniquely positioned to pursue research questions at a truly global scale.

"The goal of my research is to understand broad-scale patterns in the diversity and dynamics of tropical rainforests," says Davies, a forest ecologist. He pursues his research questions with an underlying interest in how the variation of resource availability affects the composition and dynamics of rainforests.

"Understanding how the environment constrains the distribution of tree species and influences growth and mortality rates is fundamental to predicting how global change will affect tropical rainforests," he says.
