For decades STRI has played an active role in the conservation of forests and wildlife in central Panama by managing the Barro Colorado Nature Monument (BCNM). The BCNM is part of the Panama Canal Watershed and includes Barro Colorado Island and five nearby peninsulas, with a total area of 5,600 hectares. Illegal deforestation and especially poaching are important threats to wildlife and forests in this area. STRI employs teams of professional forest guards who patrol the BCNM and provide critical protection to this key natural area.
